The 5th Grade students culminate their study of ancient Greece with an ancient Olympic ceremony that combines music, poetry and dance with a pentathlon of athletic events. The five field events included discus, javelin, running, wrestling and the long jump. The students prepare together with the emphasis on doing their personal best – balancing strength, grace, beauty and speed to help integrate all aspects of a healthy body, mind and soul.
As part of their study of ancient Greek history and mythology, the entire class organizes a pentathlon of events and spends the day with their friends from other Waldorf schools in the New York area – the Rudolf Steiner School of New York City and The Brooklyn Waldorf School. The activity augments the study of Greek mythology, geography, and Greece’s many different cultures. The fifth graders from the three schools mix into four distinct Greek city states (Thebes, Sparta, Athens and Corinth) and offer music, poetry and dance in addition to athletic events. Recognition in these events is given for grace and form as well as for speed or distance.
For the 5th Grade Olympics on Thursday, May 23rd, the Garden City Police Department has graciously extended special Event Parking to the Waldorf School of Garden City for the entire day. Visitors to the School may park along the NORTH and SOUTH SIDES of Cambridge Avenue all the way to Nassau Boulevard. Adelphi University's Public Safety and Transportation Department has also opened their parking lots to all non-Adelphi community members. We are very thankful to the Garden City Police Department and Adelphi University for supporting us in this important community activity. As always, please be mindful when parking in front of our neighbors' homes. Please avoid blocking driveways or walkways.
