Earth Day Celebration

Date: Friday - April 25, 2014
Time: All Day

Grades 1-12 will celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 25th.

In the morning, students in grades 1-3 will participate in a variety of nature-based activities including planting marigolds in the garden (marigolds are an excellent form of organic pest control) as well as making seeded mud balls.

In the afternoon, students in grades 4-12 will split into small groups to work on the school grounds from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm followed by a small celebration in the Cranin Courtyard with snacks and music. Representatives from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center will also be in attendance to talk about the wide variety of habitats, from forests to beaches to grasslands, that Long island has to offer. Students will meet some of Long Island's resident wildlife and discover why it is important to save natural habitats in their own neighborhoods.

Mrs. Jeannine Davis, Waldorf's Horticulture and Gardening Teacher, wishes to bring your attention to a few important items:

  • The dress code will be relaxed for Friday, April 25th. Students can wear jeans and gardening-clothes to school. This year, we will have an Earth Day T-Shirt Contest! I encourage students to wear t-shirts that have earth- or nature- friendly themes (bonus points if they wear homemade t-shirts). The best t-shirt will win a prize.
  • Student should bring-in a water bottle from home with his/her name labeled clearly on it. During the afternoon work-period, students will need to bring their water bottles outside as it is important to remain hydrated while out in the sun.
  • Finally, if you are interested in volunteering and helping-out for our Earth Day celebration, please email Sabine Kully ( and she will assign you to a group.

Thank you!
