ERASE Racism, is a regional not-for-profit organization that seeks to motivate high school students across Long Island to make a difference in their communities and schools by increasing their understanding of race and structural racism. Through expanded knowledge and the chance to interact with their peers across the region, ERASE Racism hopes to engage them in becoming racial equity advocates.
High School students from the Waldorf School of Garden City will have the opportunity to participate in ERASE Racism's annual Student Leadership Forum, which will take place on Monday, January 21st, 2013 at the Waldorf School of Garden City from 10 am to 4 pm.
Three years ago, ERASE Racism, in collaboration with student volunteers, designed the Student Leadership Forum as a way to teach students about racial equity through enjoyable and hands-on activities. The full-day workshop will be led by adult facilitators as well as student volunteers. The learning experiences and designed activities build teamwork and enhance leadership skills. Students will deepen their understanding of and explore positive responses to address racial equity issues.
According to the 2010 Census, Long Island is the third most segregated suburban region in the United States. In order to build bridges between students of different racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, this forum and follow up activities will support student development and encourage active involvement in achieving racial equity.
