Alan earned his bachelor's from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and his Waldorf Teacher Training Certificate from the Waldorf Institute of Mercy College, now Sunbridge College. Alan came to the Waldorf School of Garden City from the Hartsbrook School in Hadley, MA, where he had been a class teacher for over ten years. During his time there, Alan developed the school's outdoor education program and coached various afterschool sports including soccer, ultimate frisbee, skiing and snowboarding. He also taught woodworking, math, and various main lessons at other Waldorf schools around New England. In 1999, Alan completed his training in spacial dynamics.
