The core math curriculum focuses on temperature, time, and long division. Additionally, students study statistics and data analysis, including mean, median and mode. The geometry unit introduces the creation of curves using straight lines (enveloping) and the use of compass and straightedge.
The students review U.S. Customary units of measurement for length, weight, and liquid measurement. As a supplementary exercise, students are introduced to the metric system of measurement and its uses in determining length, mass and capacity. Major applications, such as perimeter and area, are also taught.
Students learn to name, order, compare, and round decimals, as well as how to add and subtract decimals, and multiply them by units of 10, 100, and 1000. Additionally, fifth graders practice coverting decimals into fractions and percents. Other subunits include long division with decimals.
