Event Recap: Waldorf's Varsity Softball Team suffered its second defeat of the season by the very strong Long Island Lutheran High School (LuHi) by the score of 10-22.
Said Coach LeSueur, "Once again, we allowed LuHi to have a very big inning - which happened to be the first inning. It was not the result of poor pitching but our inability to make the fielding plays and get the outs we needed to stop LuHi's momentum."
On the mound for the first three innings was senior Lauren Gray who pitched in her first ever appearance. Gray pitched well but lacked critical support from her teammates in the field. In fact, Gray made several outs herself nullifying LuHi's offense.
"The fact we were able to generate 10 runs in a losing effort was encouraging," said Coach LeSueur. "The team has become more alert in running the bases and we were able to produce runs with some timely hitting and smart base running."
Junior pitcher Isabella Fraim came in at the top of the fourth inning. Gray returned to shortstop which moved sophomore Jaclyn Proctor back to her usual third base position. Waldorf’s defense improved in the later innings. Junior left-fielder Anne Flomenhaft made some spectacular catches versus LuHi’s power hitters. Playing another solid game as catcher was sophomore Marianna Paone. On a LuHi steal, Paone made a perfect toss to Proctor who applied the tag - unfortunately the umpire saw it differently. |
