Waldorf's Varsity Boys Basketball Team battled it out against the Waldorf Alumni in fashion on this Saturday afternoon game. In the beginning, it looked like the Varsity team would be outmatched at height and strength. But that didn't matter. "They already put in a lot of hard work into this season," said Coach Boyd (himself a proud Waldorf alumnus - class of 2004). "And this match-up would be another test for them to learn from!"
In the opening quarter, the Varsity team were all over the place - pressuring the Alumni and causing turnovers and bad shots. Showing they were in great condition, the Varsity team pushed an up-tempo offense, causing the Alumni team (and their coach - Coach Gordon Purdie) to quickly adapt to the game pace. The Varsity Team looked to score on the fast breaks after rebounding long shots the Alumni Team took. The Varsity team took advantage with great team play on both ends to give a first quarter 9-3 lead over the opposing Alumni.
In the second quarter, the Alumni muscled their way into the paint and used their size to their advantage. Varsity adapted well by quickly trapping and causing more turnovers for the Alumni. In response, the Alumni would also make some adjustments as they started to heat up and knock down some open shots. By the quarter's end, the Alumni chipped in 14 points to the Varsity's 13 points, cutting the Varsity lead to five.
At the half, junior Caleb Yuan led all scorers with eight points, and three rebounds. Senior Brandon Verise-Kohan chipped in six points, five rebounds and four assist. Senior defensive specialist Matt Wasserman chipped in two points, three rebounds, three steals and took two charges. Junior Max Novick chipped in six points, three steals and four rebounds. Junior Chris Ogunfowora added two points and two rebounds at the half. Great effort by the whole Varsity team as they motivated each other on the side. During the break, Coach Boyd stressed to his players not to let up against this Alumni powerhouse. "Keep giving your best effort and keep playing together and we can close out the game."
The third quarter underway, the alumni made a comeback as they made some halftime adjustments - muscling their way to the basket and dumping in some great shots. But with the "no fear" attitude the Varsity possess, they continued to put up their best efforts against this team. The Alumni closed the gap and were only down by one at the end of the third. "There definitely was great intensity and play from both sides in this quarter," said Coach Boyd.
The fourth quarter finale kicked off with the Varsity trying to add to their 1-point lead. But the Alumni would also score. This back and forth scoring went on the entire quarter. The intensity level was high from both teams as neither team showed any signs of backing down. Said Coach Boyd, "This was an exciting game to watch, play, and coach!" Time was ticking as the Varsity managed to gain a two point lead with five seconds left in the game. Coach Purdie called a timeout to draw up a play. Sean Proctor '11 inbounded the ball and made a perfect full court pass to Tarik Carney '02 who took two dribbles and put up a bank shot to tie the game at 51 as time expired. It was a classic battle and all the coaches decided to end in a TIE Game - and enjoy some pizza!
Our thanks to Tarik Carney ’02, Jason Cohen ’10, Domenic D’Ercole ’10, SamKoor Iaccarino-Faye ’11, Kieran Kerekes '07, Sean Proctor ’11, Alessandro Sapuppo ’11, Kush Shukla '02, Christopher Smalley '07, and Charles Smith ’01 (as well as current parent Ed Fraim) for participating!
