The Coming-of-Age Trip is a special trip for seventh and eighth graders intended to support their physical and emotional changes during puberty. In order to create a safe and comfortable space for this sensitive conversation, the seventh and eighth grade classes are split along gender lines for a total of two weeks. During the first week, the seventh and eighth grade girls take the trip to Glen Brook while the boys remain at our Garden City campus. This arrangement reverses during the second week—the girls remain at our main campus while the boys spend a week at Glen Brook.
The curricula both at Glen Brook and the Garden City classroom are designed to facilitate discussions on the physiological transformations and psychological issues that girls and boys face during this crucial time. Topics range from the perennial issues of peer pressure, body image, and self confidence, to more complex questions about respect and conduct in conjunction with the changing nature of peer and adult relationships.
