Varsity Boys Soccer vs. The Knox School
Posted 10/19/2012 08:00PM

The soaking rains ended a few hours prior to the start of the Varsity Boys Soccer Team's final regular-season IPPSAL league game, leaving the Laszlo Jurak Athletic Field a muddy slippery quagmire for the game against the Knox School.

Unaffected, and needing the win to maintain a hold of second place, Waldorf came out with their unrelenting full offensive pressure. After ten scoring opportunities fell short of a goal, junior forward Axel Epie flicked a head ball to sophomore forward Deepjot Singh Sohal down the right wing. Singh took the ball to the top corner of the goal box and a fired the ball to the far post for the 01-00 lead.

In the second half, the Waldorf pressure came coming. Senior tri-captain midfielder Orin Pearce beat the defense down the right wing and crossed the ball to an onrushing Epie who beat the goalkeeper to the near post and increased the Waldorf lead to 02-00.

Knox, having difficulties generating any counterattacks, dropped back defensively. Waldorf’s offensive flurry kept mounting, and after several more scoring chances, junior tri-captain midfielder Peter Escribano broke loose down the left wing, turned the ball inside and let loose a shot that the Knox goalkeeper deflected right into the path of Singh Sohal. Singh Sohal placed the ball into the back of the net for the Waldorf 03-00 lead.

Once again, the tight defensive marking by senior Eric Tsai, juniors Sam Resnick and Ho Sub Kim, sophomore Sheppard Somers, and senior goalkeeper Max Novick held Knox’s attacks in-check. The staunch aggressive play of Pearce, Escribano, and senior tri-captain Caleb Yuan controlled the midfield for much of the match.

Waldorf again outshot their opponent 27-8, while senior goalkeeper Max Novick recorded five saves. The team must wait until results of the upcoming Monday game between L.I. Lutheran and Our Savior New American in order to determine where they will play their first playoff game.
