Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Staten Island Academy
PSAA Semi-Finals
Event Type: Regular (League event)
Advantage:Away
Date: October 22, 2013
Result:Loss
Score:01-02
Event Recap:

Staten Island Academy survived a hard fought PSAA semi-final match-up against a very determined and focused Varsity Girls Soccer Team from the Waldorf School of Garden City, prevailing 01-02 in dramatic fashion.

Staten Island dotted the scoreboard first with a goal at 12:09 when a shot rebounded off sophomore goalkeeper Maria Golebiewski to the SIA player, making it 00-01.

Luck was not on Waldorf's side as senior tri-captain Marianna Paone was knocked out of the game with a slight concussion shortly after the second half whistle.

But fellow senior and tri-captain Sofia Trikas took matters into her own hand. Chasing down a ball sent forward by freshman Luna Splendon, Trikas dribbled one defender and then another before crossing the ball to eighth-grader Conchetta Bohm who was there to finish the mishandled ball by the SIA goalkeeper, thus making the score at 01-01 in the 54th minute.

Senior tri-captain Jaclyn Proctor, freshman Fiona Somers, sophomores Skyla Davis and Julia Gonzalez were superb in handling the potent SIA attack. With only four minutes remaining in the game, a shot was taken by an SIA player that ricocheted off a Waldorf defender. Golebiewski, diving in the direction of the shot, had no chance on the redirect.

Waldorf continued to press aggressively in the final minutes. With seconds counting down, a long throw-in by Davis into the SIA goal box created a breath taking final chance for Waldorf.

"It was a hard fought battle and the girls deserve all the credit. They played tough and together the entire game," said head coach Kim Wyant. "We were unrelenting - trying to get the game to overtime - all the way to the final whistle. For me and for the fans, it was an absolute pleasure to witness."

Freshman Abby Picoli worked tirelessly and effectively in the midfield along with classmate Splendori. Fellow freshman Phoebe Akaba-Koubel also made huge contributions as replacement for injured junior Mikayla Ver Pault.
