College Guidance

Our college planning services are provided by Dr. James Malone, a highly experienced Nationally Certified Counselor, who has been working with high school students and families for 35 years.

The process includes:

• a comprehensive orientation meeting with the junior class and their parents
• an evaluation of a detailed questionnaire examining the student’s initial college preferences
• a one hour face-to-face counseling session
• a personalized audio-report interpreting the student’s personal career assessment, suggestions
for exploring majors, college admissions testing and visitations
• a custom-designed listing of colleges for each rising senior to explore during spring and summer
• on-going telephone, e-mail support and correspondence

Starting in the student’s junior year, the college guidance counselor works with parents and students to prepare families for the lengthy process that lies before them. During the initial meetings, testing, entrance requirements and college admissions strategies are discussed. Each student completes a comprehensive assessment package that provides useful information about career interest, skills, values and college preferences. The college guidance counselor analyzes the information and then makes related practical suggestions and recommendations on the student’s career profile and college choices.

Early in the fall of senior year, the planning cycle continues as students, and their parents have an important face-to-face meeting with Dr. Malone to sculpt the final list of colleges and manage the details of the application process. All important issues are addressed: early decision/action options, submission of test scores, financial aid, essays and a variety of strategies to enhance a positive consideration of each application.
