On October 13th, the 7th and 8th grade classes went on an excursion together as they sailed for three-hours on the Clearwater Sloop on the Hudson River. We drove to the 79th Street Boat Basin in Manhattan to meet the boat. After boarding, we helped raise the sail as we sang a sea shanty. The students were assigned to groups and rotated to different stations throughout the sail. They learned about life below deck, how to navigate a river, steer the boat, about some of the animals that live in the Hudson River, turbidity, and about the problem of microplastics. It was a beautiful day, and we had a fantastic group of young people to teach our students. It was also a special experience for the 7th and 8th grade students to share as we began the school year.
