8th Grade: Martin Luther King, Jr and the Children’s March

In preparation for the MLK program, the 8th grade students watched the Teaching Tolerance film, Mighty Times: The Children’s March. They learned how the struggle for rights came to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and that the young people played a role in ending segregation in that city.  The 8th grade saw the courage and the sense of humor that the young people brought to the confrontations; music played an important role in bringing unity and joy to the marchers.

The 8th grade students have been inspired to share the music and story of the children’s march in a presentation for the 4th-8th grade assembly.
