In conjunction with its annual Fall Fair, the Waldorf School of Garden City held its Alumni Day celebration on Saturday, October 20th.

Over 30 graduating classes returned to the Garden City campus. Members from the classes of 1970, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were in attendance.

Many alumni and their families dropped-by the High School Student Room to enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast, to browse through old yearbooks, and to reconnect with friends. In the morning, alumni took part in a special Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta Sing-Along with Waldorf’s former choral director, Mr. George V. Rose, and former lower school music teacher and piano accompanist, Mrs. Jeanette Resnick. For close to 40 years from the early 1960s until the early 2000s, the School produced and performed these Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. In addition to reminiscing about these operettas and enjoying a photo slide show, attendees sang a selection of songs from H.M.S. Pinafore, Iolanthe, The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, and Rudiggore.

“When I was in the 3rd grade,” said alumnus and Waldorf’s communications director Robert Ingenito, “I remember Mrs. Resnick coming into our class and telling us the story of Iolanthe. As children, we learned the stories to these operettas. We watched, with awe-struck eyes from our little wooden chairs in the audience, as the older students performed these operettas for us. Then, as older students, we learned these same operettas and performed them on stage for our parents – and most importantly – for the next generation of students who were rising through the grades. They were so much fun!”

On a day when temperatures reached into the upper 60s/low 70s and skies were clear, over 20 alumni men and women participated in the afternoon’s alumni vs. varsity soccer games. In the Alumnae vs. Varsity Girls Soccer Game, the Varsity team won by a score of 1 to 0. In the Alumni vs. Varsity Boys Soccer Game, the game ended by a tie score of 2 to 2.
