The Second Grade is aiming to begin every day outside with singing, speech work, and focused attention activities. Our goal is to increase the number of direct experiences the children have with the natural world. We create sound maps, go on silent sharing walks, and meet and greet trees.
We pair up and take turns acting as cameras. With eyes closed, we are led by our “photographers” to a sight in nature that stands out to them as noteworthy. They tap a shoulder twice and we open our eyes to capture the scene and then they tap once more and we close our “lens” and move on to the next photo opportunity.
We create storyboard scenes using items collected from the green world around us.
Creating this space at the beginning of our day to honor and enjoy nature’s gifts paves our way to a fruitful morning in the classroom.
