Deirdre Somers

High School English & High School Co-Advisor

Deirdre Somers earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Drama and Master’s Degree in Dramatic Literature and Criticism from Vassar College. She was fortunate enough to spend a year in London taking classes with professionals from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London Academy of Music and Drama Arts. While pursuing her graduate degree, she was the Technical Director/Light Designer at the Powerhouse Theatre, in this role she also directed plays for the Vassar Drama Department.

She later went to Hong Kong to work as a production manager for a corporate theatre company. After two years, Deirdre returned to Vassar, first as a visiting artist in the Drama Department, then special assistant to the Dean of Students responsible for the Berkshire Women’s History Conference, and finally as the Apprentice Company Manager for the Vassar & New York Stage and Film Powerhouse Theatre, a job she held for eight years. The last fifteen plus years have been a whirlwind of life, love and laughter with much of her time spent at The Waldorf School of Garden City, where she has gratefully learned more from her students than she has taught, especially from those in the classes of 2006, 2011 and 2016 who she co-advised.

Deirdre has 2 children, one a current student and one an alumnus of the Waldorf School of Garden City. She has many stories from her time in theatre, ask her sometime. Fun Fact, Deidre has twice been struck by lightning.
