Waldorf's Varsity Girls Soccer Team got off to a fantastic start scoring two goals in the first twelve minutes and held off an aggressive attack from Portledge for a 02-01 home victory. The team's record is now 3-3-1, good for third place in the PSAA Conference.
Waldorf pressed the Portledge defense from the initial whistle, creating several excellent chances in front of the Portledge goal. Sophomore Alexis Cao passed to senior Sofia Trikas who drilled the ball into the left corner of the net for the first goal of the match. Just nine minutes after Trikas's goal, senior Marianna Paone took a long throw-in from sophomore Skyla Davis who out-jumped the leaping Portledge goalkeeper to make it a 02-00 halftime lead.
Portledge came out strong and determined from the start of the second half, and managed to pull one back just ten minutes into the half. Waldorf continued to be dangerous in front of goal but were denied several great opportunities by excellent goalkeeping from Portledge.
Freshman Abby Picoli was very active in the midfield making huge contributions along with fellow classmate Luna Splendori and junior Mikayla Ver Pault.
Waldorf goalkeeper Maria Golebiewski recorded seven saves on fourteen shots, while Waldorf had thirteen. The match was spirited and physical, resulting in eight fouls for Waldorf and twelve by Portledge including one yellow card.
Coach Wyant noted, "good defending wins game and that was evident today!"
