Varsity Boys Basketball vs. Kew-Forest School

Waldorf’s Varsity Boys Basketball Team are 2-1 in IPPSAL and looked to keep its winning streak going as they took on the Kew Forest School at home.

As the ball was tipped off, Waldorf was all over the opposition – refusing to give them any space to operate. In the opening period, Kew Forest had to throw up shots because they could not penetrate through the Waldorf defense. Waldorf rebounded well and ran the floor, forcing Kew Forest to keep up with the game’s pace. The team shared and spaced the floor, creating moments for each other to take turns scoring. The Waldorf boys put up 15 first-quarter points and held Kew Forest to only 10. During the second quarter, Kew Forest shot itself back into the game and changed its defense to slow down the easy baskets Waldorf was making. Kew Forest outscored Waldorf, 17-8. And at the end of the first half, Waldorf was down, 23-27.

“I was stressed during halftime,” said Coach Boyd. “Kew Forest was on a scoring run. It was the little things that we stopped doing that helped Kew Forest get a lead. The boys had to pick up there heads and open up the communication in order to get back in the game.”

During the third quarter, senior captain Caleb Yuan started draining shots from all over to help his team climb back into the game. Yuan scored 11 of the teams 13 points for the quarter. The Waldorf defense also picked up as senior Orin Pearce became very pesky creating numerous turnovers. The intensity was overwhelming as Kew Forest was outscored 13 to 7.

“We had a great rebounding effort,” said Coach Boyd, “that we displayed for that quarter. The team limited Kew Forest to 1 shot every possession.” Seniors Cody Bach and Yuan grabbed 15 rebounds combined for the quarter (Yuan 7, Bach 8). In the fourth quarterm Waldorf and Kew Forest exhanged baskets, both scoring 14 points.

It came down to the last shot and Waldorf had to defend the possession. The team anticipated the passes and deflected the ball so Kew Forest could not inbound it. Kew Forest was not able to get a shot off and Waldorf prevailed in the close game with the final score of 50-48.</>
