Waldorf’s Varsity Boys Soccer Team was defeated by Long Island Lutheran High School this past Friday by the score of 00-01.
LuHi remains undefeated in the IPPSAL league and maintains their strong hold on first place. Waldorf remains tied for third place with Our Savior New American School and three points behind second place Lawrence Woodmere Academy.
“The game was very competitive,” said Coach LeSueur, “and the early chances fell to an energized Waldorf team looking to put a blemish on LuHi’s record. However, we could not convert these opportunities especially the excellent throw-ins that senior captain Orin Pearce created.”
Waldorf’s defense was led by junior sweeper Ho Sub Kim who played an outstanding game and was ably supported by senior goalkeeper Max Novick who took control of the goal area.
The first half ended 00–00. During the halftime break, Coach LeSueur stressed that the team needed to tighten-up the defensive assignments and for several players to start challenging for the ball with more energy. The team started to generate more offensive opportunities in the second half but unfortunately no one was able to dent the net.
With about 15 minutes to play, LuHi was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out. The LuHi player struck a well placed ball into the high corner of the opposite post. It appeared that goal keeper Max Novick zeroed-in on it but with three LuHi players charging, the ball somehow found its way across the line. Novick claimed that he had been interfered with but the referee awarded a goal.
Down by a goal, Waldorf appeared to have a greater sense of purpose as they looked to even the score. The team’s best chance came when junior co-captain Peter Escribano made a terrific run down the left flank beating LuHi’s left fullback and crossing a low driven ball into the six yard box. A Waldorf striker seemed to have it in his sights and the LuHi goalkeeper was caught outside; however, the end result was thwarted by the inability of Waldorf to finish the opportunity. Highly charged energy was evident by both teams but the only goal of the game would stand and LuHi had another win.
