Varsity Boys Soccer vs. Solomon Schechter Day School

In their second home game of the season, Waldorf’s Varsity Boys Soccer Team hosted Solomon Schechter Day School (SSDS) at Waldorf’s Laszlo Jurak Athletic Field on a beautiful fall day.

Starting out with their high pressure offensive surge, Waldorf needed only 5:10 of the game for junior tri-captain Peter Escribano to convert a lead pass from senior tri-captain Caleb Yuan to score the game’s first goal.

With the continued pressure, freshman Max Sapuppo headed a second goal off of a throw-in from senior tri-captain Orin Pearce for a 02-00 lead. The quick passing, movement and constant barrage of shots on goal finally netted junior Thomas TJ Bohm his first goal of the season when he received a through pass from Yuan and muscled it pass the SSDS goalkeeper for a 03-00 lead.

Senior Cody Bach fired off a shot from Bohm’s crossing ball for a 04-00 Waldorf lead, then headed-in his second goal of the day on a crossing ball from Escribano to run the lead to 05-00 that stood as the half ended. Senior goalkeeper Max Novick recorded four saves in the first half and all 22 Waldorf players contributed valuable playing time.

To make up for some unwarranted careless play in the first half, Waldorf needed only 2:00 minutes of the second half for Esribano to split the SSDS defense, take a through pass from senior Eric Tsai, and score his second goal of the game. Sapuppo finished off the game’s scoring with his second goal to put Waldorf ahead 07-00.

Waldorf pulled together, tightened down defensively and held off SSDS for the remainder of the game. Second half freshman goalkeeper William Strauss had 7 very athletic saves to preserve the team’s first shutout of the season for the final 07-00 win. As in the first half, all 22 Waldorf players contributed to the team victory in the second half too.

Waldorf outshot SSDS 32-14, 3-2 in corner kicks, and the combined goalkeeping of Novick and Strauss recorded 11 saves to the opponent’s 12 saves.
