In their second league game of the 2012 season, the Varsity Boys Soccer Team traveled to Medford, Long Island, New York for a match against Our Savior New American School (OSNA). From the start, Waldorf exerted early offensive pressure and got off 5 shots in the opening minutes before senior tri-captain Orin Pearce placed a throw-in to the near post that freshman Max Sapuppo headed-in to score at the 17:00 minute mark for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later at the 19:00 minute mark, junior tri-captain Peter Escribano split two OSNA defenders, received a pass from Sapuppo and tucked the ball into the corner for the second goal and a 2-0 Waldorf lead. OSNA closed out the half with a breakaway goal at the 30:00th minute and closed the score, 2-1.
After several halftime adjustments to neutralize the opponents’ speed, Waldorf came out with renewed offensive pressure. But a scramble in front of senior goalie Max Novick, after an initial diving block, saw the ball glance off a Waldorf player and fall into the goal, making the score 2-2 ten minutes in. With the continued offensive pressure, Sapuppo beat the goalie from 20 yards out abd put Waldorf back on top 3-2 at the 58:41 minute.
Several minutes later, Escribano, out on a breakaway, was taken down inside the OSNA penalty area. Pearce drove the penalty kick into the back of the net for the 4-2 Waldorf lead in the 64:00th minute. With 6:30 remaining, OSNA was awarded an indirect kick inside the Waldorf penalty box. The defensive “wall” blocked the initial shot and Novick made saves on the next two rebound shots but was unable to clear the loose ball out of the area. OSNA managed a fourth shot that found the corner of the net and tightened the score to 4-3.
Waldorf secured their defense for the remainder of the game while still getting in several more shots on goal for the final win. Waldorf outshot OSNA 23-10, and Novick recorded six wonderful saves while the OSNA keeper worked hard to make 11 saves. Waldorf was whistled for seven penalties and OSNA was called for 10 penalties in the clean yet physical game.
