Varsity Girls Basketball vs. Solomon Schechter Day School

Waldorf’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team improved their IPPSAL record to 04–01 with a solid 40–16 victory over Solomon Schechter Day School. The win was especially significant as Schechter and Waldorf were both tied for second place in the league and the well earned win gives Waldorf a secure hold on second place.

For the first time this season, the team employed a full court press to disrupt the previously well organized offense of Schechter. Utilizing their speed and height, Waldorf employed a 1–2–2 trapping zone, which forced numerous turnovers and resulted in transition baskets for the fired-up Waldorf squad.

Assigned to challenge the inbounds pass, junior forward Ajanai Miller Randolph did a terrific job of forcing Schechter into errant throws. Working with her on the wings to stop any attacks on the outside were junior guard Marianna Paone and senior co-captain Isabella Fraim. Backing up the front line were senior point guard Carolyn Smalls junior guard Jaclyn Proctor.

“Our early full court press had its toll on Schechter both physically and mentally,” said Coach LeSueur. The score at the end of the first half was Waldorf, 26, and Schechter, 07.

In the second half, Waldorf backed off and stayed in their familiar 2-3 zone. The Waldorf offense sputtered in the third quarter but the team found their rhythm again in the fourth and locked up the game.

Miller Randolph scored 11 points followed by Fraim with eight. Paone had an excellent game as her dribble drives caused panic in the Schechter defense. Proctor had five points followed by sophomore Mikayla Ver Pault with four. Freshman Teagan Novick came in at the end and finished with a clutch shot for her first two points of the season.

Earning some quality minutes were freshman Skyla Davis and Maria Golebiewski who both played excellent defense and controlled the defensive boards.

Remarked Coach LeSueur, “We will look to continue our winning ways once we enter the new year!”
