Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Lawrence Woodmere Academy

Waldorf’s Varsity Girls Soccer Team played host to Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) on the Laszlo Jurak Athletic Field in their second match in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PSAA) league on Wednesday, September 19th.

The team came out with enthusiastic energy and controlled the game from the start. After nine early offensive opportunities, junior forward Marianna Paone broke free inside the goal box, took a pass from junior forward Sofia Trikas and scored Waldorf’s first goal at 16 minutes and 48 seconds in the first half for a 01-00 lead.

Five more shots later, senior midfielder Lexie Van Zant came down the middle and tucked the ball into the corner of the goal for a 02-00 Waldorf lead. Minutes later, Van Zant replicated her run off a pass from senior tri-captain midfielder Katerina D’Erole and scored her second goal for a 03-00 lead.

The staunch defense of senior tri-captain Carolyn Smalls and seniors Sophia Trikas and Anne Flomenhaft kept LWA from getting any shots against senior goalkeeper Isabella Fraim, while juniors Ajanai Miller, Jacklyn Proctor and sophomore Mikayla Ver Pault took charge of the midfield.

Van Zant completed her hat trick scoring with her third goal with 50 seconds remaining in the half for a commanding 4-0 Waldorf lead. Waldorf outshot LWA 19-00 in the first half while forcing the opponent’s goalkeeper to have to make 11 saves.

In the second half, Waldorf’s fifth shot came in the first four minutes. Paone made her second goal of the game and gave Waldorf a 05-00 lead. About three minutes later, Paone recorded her own “hat trick” when her driving corner kick glanced off an LWA player and squeezed into the corner of the goal.

Waldorf maintained possession and control of the game until the final whistle, a 06-00 win, while showing their command statistically: 31-3 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks. LWA’s goalkeeper was forced to make 19 saves while Waldorf’s freshman goalkeeper Maria Golebiewski recorded two saves in the second half. Every uniformed Waldorf player got valuable playing time during the game.
