Waldorf Watch: African Dance

The Seniors of the Waldorf School of Garden City are currently studying Africa during their Main Lesson block. As part of the block, the class will perform a traditional African dance for our community during the Thanksgiving Assembly. To add to the authenticity of the event, Mohommed Mahmoud, grandmother of senior Ardo Ali, very  graciously traveled to Ethiopia to procure authentic African clothing for each 12th grade student to wear during the performance.

This would not have been possible without the assistance of Amelsa Yazew, Ali’s cousin and the proprietor of of Little Gabies. Little Gabies specializes in producing homemade “gabies,” a traditional Ethiopian cloth.  Yaezew personally shopped for each item which was then purchased and gifted to the School. You can see a slideshow of the various outfits below.

Little Gabies has previously been featured for their traditional Ethiopian clothing on CNN. You can watch the video here.

We are grateful to the extended Ali family for their help to make the upcoming assembly a rich cultural learning experience for the seniors and our entire School community.
