Alumni Day 2011

In conjunction with its annual Fall Fair, the Waldorf School of Garden City held its “Alumni Day” celebration on Saturday, October 22nd. Alumni returned to the Garden City campus to reconnect with current and former faculty.

Many alumni and their families also dropped-by the High School Student Room to enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast, to browse through old yearbooks, and to reconnect with friends. Former faculty members Leonore Russell, George Shea, Robert “Wesch” Weschler, Faith Rose, George V. Rose, and Laszlo Jurak – as well as a few other former and current faculty members – were on hand to greet and see their former students. Members from the classes of 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1971, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 were in attendance.

On a day when temperatures reached into the mid 60s and skies were clear, over 20 alumni men and women participated in the men and women’s alumni vs. varsity soccer games. In the “Alumnae vs. Varsity Girls Soccer Game,” the Varsity team won by a score of 2 to 0. In the “Alumni vs. Varsity Boys Soccer Game,” the Alumni team won by a score of 5 to 1.

“Thank you to all of Waldorf’s alumni, faculty, and friends for “playing” such a positive role in the highly successful alumni games,” said Development Assistant Jeanenne La Bella ’03. “These games were spirited and competitive. But most importantly, everyone involved contributed so much to the overall enjoyment of the event. Our student-athletes felt that the games reflected our alumni’s respect and admiration for the current teams’ successes and the importance of building relationships well beyond their Waldorf playing careers.”

Said Waldorf alumnus and center midfielder for the alumni team Edwin Silva ’81, “It was clear that everyone who played in the games understood the importance of staying involved and “giving back” to the traditions and to the athletic program at our beloved Waldorf School. I hope we can do something again in the not-too-distant future – perhaps this spring!”

A new addition to the Alumni Day festivities this year included an Alumni Tent located next to the Laszlo Jurak Athletic Field. Visitors to the tent enjoyed special treats donated by Houlihan’s restaurant in Westbury, New York as well as a special raffle for Waldorf School Spirit Wear.
