Martin Somers

Woodworking Teacher

A Long Island native, Martin Somers holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from the New York Institute of Technology and is also a graduate of the Foundation Studies Program at the Winkler Center for Adult Education. Martin teaches woodworking in the 5th grade through the High School.

In addition to his experience teaching woodworking at Camp Glen Brook and at the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan, Martin brings a lifelong love of woodworking to our School community. Through the years, Martin has been an apprentice – as well as master builder – for various furniture makers such as Geoffrey Greene and Augustino Lanzo. In addition to teaching woodworking at the Waldorf School, Martin is the owner and operator of Somers Design Studio – his own furniture-making business in Rockville Centre, New York – where he designs and builds one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.

Since 1995, he has been a set designer and technical director working with all-student crews on designing, constructing and painting scenery and props for countless plays at the Waldorf School – as well as at South Side High School.
