Varsity Girls Basketball vs. Lawrence Woodmere Academy

Waldorf’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team upped its IPPSAL record to two wins and one loss with a well balanced offense defeating Lawrence Woodmere Academy by the score of 37-08. Senior co-captain Isabella Fraim led the offense by scoring 12 points. Fraim scored 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter. Junior swing guard Sofia Trikas, who has been coming off the bench early to bring more defensive intensity, responded with eight points.

The overall outstanding play of senior co-captain Carolyn Smalls and junior Jaclyn Proctor, who both provided the offense with four points each, has been the key to Waldorf’s improved offensive play. The team’s other two starters for the first three games of the season have been junior center Ajanai Miller Randolph and junior guard Marianna Paone. “Although they did not register any points in the game,” said Coach LeSueur, “their presence in the starting line up has been crucial.” Miller Randolph’s work off both the offensive and defensive boards has limited the other teams to only “one shot and done.” Paone’s creates better looks for all her teammates as her ability to drive and find open teammates off the dribble gives her multiple assists.

The team has been getting some sound play off the bench as senior guard Katarina D’Ercole (3 points) gains experience and gives the team toughness under the defensive boards. Sophomore Mikayla Ver Pault continues to impress the coaching staff with her defensive abilities and willingness to play multiple positions.

Sophomore Emma Wallace (2 points) has gained confidence in these past three games and her unselfish play makes the game easier for her teammates.

Sophomore Nicole Tsai is settling down into the game and will see more playing time as the season progresses.

The team’s freshmen are “making the jump” to the varsity level, where the speed of the game and strength of the opponents can be a bit overwhelming. Maria Golebiewski (4 points), Teagan Novick and Skyla Davis have each gained valuable playing experience already this season. The coaching staff has high expectations for these three players and feel confident they will push the starters throughout the season.
