WSGC Gardening Teacher and Her Father Donate 80 Cases of Wine

WSGC Gardening Teacher, Amy Singh, and her father, Michael Smith (the Owner of Deseo de Michael Wine), were featured in the Garden City News for donating 80 cases of Chardonnay to Garden City restaurants. Many local restaurants and small businesses have suffered financially due to the pandemic. The father and daughter team wanted to help in any way they could to provide some relief to business owners. They hope their donation will inspire others to give where they can to help those suffering financially due to COVID-19.

“On Wednesday, January 13th, Deseo de Michael vineyard owner Michael Smith and his daughter Amy Singh, a spokesperson for the vineyard, distributed over 80 cases of chardonnay worth $40,000 from their vineyard to over 20 local Garden City Restaurants. Their goal was to help those local small business owners who have been struggling to survive during the pandemic. Michael Smith and his wife Teresa are residents of Garden City, and their daughter Amy is a teacher at the [The Waldorf School of Garden City]. Their hope is that this donation sparks inspiration for others in this wonderful village and elsewhere.” – Garden City News

Their passion does not end with philanthropy. Deso de Michael was built with desire (it’s in the name) and gratitude for life after Mr. Smith worked as an active firefighter during 9/11. “The events on September 11, 2001, had an overwhelming effect on nearly all in the tri-state area, but for many first responders, the effects were profound. Long-time Massapequa resident Michael Smith, a member of the FDNY at the time, said, “While I’ve always been a person that could appreciate life, after 9/11 I became so distraught I realized I need to do something I want to do—something I love to do.” A 30-year veteran of the fire department, Smith retired in 2002. He and his wife of 33 years, Teresa, began to look for a place they could enjoy on the East End of Long Island…” – Deso de Michael website.
